Butch Lee: The man who helped make McGuire cry

Most remember the 1977 NCAA Championship for the moment of Al McGuire winning the national title over North Carolina in his last game as head coach...but many forget that a Puerto Rican kid named "Butch" Lee was the reason behind sending McGuire out as a champion...as the clock ticked away in the final seconds, McGuire broke down in tears...

In the title game, Lee scored 19 points and was named Most Outstanding Player as the Warriors beat Carolina 67-59...

Lee was drafted in the first round of the 1978 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks...he became the first Puerto Rican-born player to play in the NBA...Lee's NBA career was cut short because of injuries...he lasted four years in the league, but managed to win a championship ring as part of the Los Angeles Lakers 1980 title run...

After his playing career, Lee returned to Puerto Rico and became a head basketball coach...as of 2004, he was still a coach in Puerto Rico's professional basketball league...
